EPL giants Manchester United interested in signing professional e-sports team

Manchester United could be the biggest name to enter esports yet

The recent e-sports or competitive video gaming revolution has raked in millions of dollars for various organisations. This particular meteoric rise has transititioned into a multi-million dollar industry, generating massive amounts in prize money and, now broadcasting revenue. Hence, it was only natural progression for football clubs to jump on the latest bandwagon. After high flying West Ham United took the first english plunge, sources suggest that Manchester united have entered a bidding war with reputed e-sports organisation Fnatic for the signature of a top Overwatch squad.

According to administrative stalwarts within the competitive Overwatch community, the bidding has been going on for two weeks. A source with Overwatch scene said, “We had no direct contact about this, but we know that there are big football clubs from England like Manchester United, who had expressed interest earlier. Whether they’re still going ahead with this, I don’t know. Even Schalke was interested as they are heavily growing their esports section.”

The only point that can be highlighted is their previously expressed interest, hence the rumour within the professional circuit is of a return. German Bundesliga side, Schalke already boast of a League of Legends (LoL) team participating in European level compeition, hence their interest is being considered a route for expansion.

In terms of financial muscle flexing, Manchester United are worth ($3.3 billion) as compared to Fnatic’s ($42.5 million), hence, the 13-time Premier League champions are being considered front-runners. La Liga giants Valencia have also officially expressed their willingnes to sign an e-sports outfit.
