Unlocking outfits in Mario Kart World is all about one thing, and that is — Dash Food power-ups. These bright-orange food bags work like collectibles and boosts, and they’re the only way to get new character outfits.
You can collect Dash Food in two main ways:
While Racing
Dash Food appears on the sides of tracks, especially near Yoshi-themed restaurants or eateries. They spawn outside the main racing path, so you may need to swerve slightly to grab them without losing momentum. They're also common in both Grand Prix and Knockout Tour modes.
In Free Roam Mode
Dash Food bags also spawn around the world in exploration mode. This method is slower but helpful if you’re targeting specific foods without the chaos of a race.
What does Dash Food actually do?
Dash Food comes in regionally-themed variants, meaning that depending on the “cuisine” you grab, your character’s outfit changes to match the food’s origin. Not all food bags result in a new outfit. Some may give you a speed boost (the larger the platter, the bigger the boost).
And certain characters like Goombas, Cows, or Dolphins can’t wear outfits at all. They’ll still get the speed boost, but no visual changes.
How many outfits can you unlock in Mario Kart World?

Each character comes with at least one alternate costume by default. But as you collect more Dash Food, some characters can unlock up to 10 different outfits, depending on how much regional food you grab.
Characters like Mario, Peach, and Toad tend to have more outfit options, while side characters have fewer (or none). All unlocked outfits are permanent and can be selected at any time through the Character Select Screen. They’re purely cosmetic with no stat changes or gameplay bonuses.
How to disable outfit changes
If you prefer consistency or just don’t want your outfit changing mid-race, the game gives you a simple fix.
- Go to Settings
- Find the “Dash Food” toggle
- Switch it off to stop automatic outfit changes when picking up Dash Food
You’ll still get the speed boost, but the transformation effect will be disabled. You can always enable it later.
Unlocking outfits in Mario Kart World is all about exploring tracks, collecting regional Dash Food, and seeing what wild new look your favorite racer ends up with.
