At the Tokyo Game Show, Kojima Productions revealed a surprising new character in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, called Diamond Dog, (or DD for short.) DD, Snakes pet wolf, is an optional partner to help snake, like the female sniper Quiet, which Kojima had focused on before. The Tokyo game Show report suggests that finding him in a play through would be optional, and that it is possible for players to leave out DD entirely, with it only becoming available after stumbling into its mother. It is also assumed that DD (along with Snake's horse and female sniper Quiet) can die as a result of the players actions, with the story continuing without them.
The baby wolf, with vision impairment, is discovered by Big Boss while trekking through the woods. An older wolf, presumably its mother is dead nearby. Apparently, Ocelot trains the dog and a little ahead in time; DD is a full grown wolf with an eye patch, ready for action. It is not certain as to how DD would provide aid to Snake, but tasks such as finding explosives or locating suspects could be close guesses.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain still does not have a release date. However, Kojima did mention again at the Tokyo Game Show that it would be out in 2015. And with the company sharing numerous videos and information on Metal gear solid 5 throughout the summer; it does look like a lock for 2015. Here’s an English-sub version from Metal Gear Moments of the DD reveal shown at TGS.
