Mortal Kombat X Review

Mortal Kombat X’s cover featuring fan favourite Scorpion

If there was any doubt about Mortal Kombat X’s destiny as the best game in the series when it was announced last June, that was all cleared up when it released to the world a week ago. Not only is Mortal Kombat X a cut above all its predecessors, but will also go down in history as one of the best fighting games of all time. One of the many standout features of MKX is the introduction of entirely new characters, which may seem like a risk because old is gold, but these fresh faces actually bring in an awesome dynamic to the game.

Each of the new characters have their own set of unique abilities, which is sure to make you spoilt for choices. Coming to the fighting aspect of Mortal Kombat X, I’d say it’s definitely, a class above all the other games with the stunning graphics and character detail making up for an extremely fluid gaming experience.

New level of realism

One thing that definitely benefits from the MKX’s stunning graphics is the Fatality finishers that the series is so famous, or rather infamous, for. A Fatality that particularly stands out is Cassie Cage’s ‘Selfie’ fatality which involves smashing her opponents jaw to pulp, striking a pose with her hapless victim and upload the picture on a social networking site. The ‘Selfie’ is already making headlines and was ranked as the second best MKX fatality by CraveOnline. The graphics make the finishers delightfully gritty and that combined with the phenomenal character animations take realism and grittiness to a whole new level.

As I said before - with all the choices available picking the character that best suits you promises to be a herculean task, but hey who says one has to hurry? Take your own sweet time with each character, and the one that best suits you will surely emerge.

One fighter you certainly should give a try is newbie Takeda Takashi who certainly stands apart as one of the game’s best new additions, with his enviable choice of weapons combined with his excellent martial arts capabilities sure to make him a fan favourite.

However, one aspect where Mortal Kombat manages to falter yet again is the story mode of MKX. I can never really understand why NetherRealm chose to create a story mode for its Mortal Kombat series. Perhaps it was done to appease those single player loyalists who were crying out for a story mode.

The Krypt returns

A story mode in Mortal Kombat sticks out like a sore thumb because let’s face it – Mortal Kombat isn’t the type of game that requires a story. I mean it makes little sense to see Johnny and Cassie Cage, who are father and daughter in the story mode, punch each other’s guts out in other modes.

The Krypt makes a return once again in MKX, where amazing upgrades like costumes, new moves, skins and various other knick knacks can be unlocked with Koins. PC gamers have a golden opportunity to take advantage of the Krypt as NetherRealm made 10,000 free Krypt Koins available to them in compensation for several glitches in the PC version.

Oh and another thing that may excite you is the impending arrival of Jason Voorhees of Friday The 13th fame, who is set to make his Mortal Kombat debut on May 5th. The much loved man monster will be available through DLC on the 5th exclusively for Kombat Pack owners while others will have to wait for a week before they can get their hands on him.

All in all I’d say Mortal Kombat X’s story mode aside, the game is rather excellent. The new characters will certainly be a breath of fresh air for gamers, who are guaranteed hours upon hours of compelling gameplay. That being said, Mortal Kombat X’s place as one of the best fighting games of a generation looks comfortably assured.
