If true, the future of Mortal Kombat 1 looks grim (Image via Warner Bros. Games)

Mortal Kombat 1 may have axed all of its Year 3 content. According to leaker @_FatedUnknown_ on Reddit, developer NetherRealm Studios will no longer be releasing planned future content for last year's acclaimed gory fighter. This seemingly includes a story expansion that would have added more content for fans of the franchise to fight through.

This is no doubt disappointing news for players who enjoyed MK1 despite its shortcomings. Here is everything about why this may have happened.

Mortal Kombat 1 Year 3 content may have been canceled due to poor sales of previous DLC

The leaker alleges that this step was taken by the devs after the poor sales of the latest Khaos Reigns expansion. Released in September 2024, this DLC content launched to middling reception, barreling down to Overwhelmingly Negative on the Steam storefront on PC. Much criticism was leveled at the super short length and poor pacing.

The fact that this came after the outrageous $70 price tag of the base game and in-game monetization did not help matters either. As such, assuming the low sales reasoning is legitimate, it would make sense why the team would want to backpedal on new paid content. It remains to be seen what move NetherRealm takes from hereon, and if any of the allegedly canned DLC will be repurposed into something else.

However, there is no official word yet from either NetherRealm or the publisher Warner Bros. Games. As such, it is best to take this information with a grain of salt until we get further news of any future content from the official sources.

Outside of Khaos Reigns, the game received a bunch of content, some well-received, including exciting additions such as the Omni Man (Invincible), and Homelander (The Boys) guest characters.

Mortal Kombat 1 is available to purchase on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
