Nintendo has finally announced a release date for its highly anticipated third-person (paintball) shooter, Splatoon. The brand new IP has garnered quite an interest among Wii U owners ever since its reveal at last year’s E3. Though it was announced that the game would be out sometime in May, Nintendo did not disclose an official release date until now.

The game will be launching on May 29th this year, exclusively for the Wii U. This seems like a good time to release any kid friendly game, since most schools will be off for the summer, so it is sure to gain quite a crowd of players. Splatoon will be releasing around the same time as Mario Kart 8 did last year, and hopefully, will be as successful.

Splatoon is a colourful paintball game that adds a family-friendly twist to the popular shooter genre. Unlike other third-person shooter titles, the objective of this game is to cover as much of the levels surroundings (floors and walls) in your teams paint colour.

The team that manages to cover the whole area in their team colours wins the match. So instead of shooting opponents, your main focus will be to cover as much ground as possible.

Also the game boasts of other quirky features such as unique movement abilities. Players can transform into squids and swim through their colours at will, making movement tons faster.

The game will also be getting its own line of Amiibo toys, though they are yet to reveal more details on this.
