Nintendo’s Wii U may not have won over its global audience, but it’s doing fairly well in its home country with more than 2.5 million units sold in Japan.

The figures were released by Media Create, who stated that the console crossed sales of 2,508,312 units since its initial release back in 2012. Last November’s figures showed that 2 million units were sold in Japan, which means sales have increased by a staggering 500,000 since then.

Japan holds the distinction of having more Wii U owners than PS4 ones, with sales of Sony’s flagship gaming device standing at 1,679,537 units. Although the Wii U has been in the market much longer than the Playstation 4.

However, these astonishing sales figures may experience a dip on the back of the release of Nintendo’s next big console called the NX. Big things are expected from the NX as it will be seen as Nintendo’s push to recover ground lost to its competitors as well as a worthy successor to the Wii.

The Wii U, which has sold 10 million units globally, was never as good as the original Wii and was one of the reasons Nintendo struggled against its competitors.

But with the NX on the way, the company may very well see a change in fortune.
