Outcast 1.1 now available on Steam, GOG owners will get free update

Outcast re-released on Steam and GOG

A new version of the 1999 open world action-adventure game, Outcast, will be re-releasing on Steam and GOG as Outcast 1.1. The game will still be the same, but will feature significant enhancements such as redone skyboxes, redesigned HUD (which will fit better with higher resolutions), bug fixes, and Xbox 360 controller support. The game will now be able to run on modern computers and offers higher resolutions. So players will no longer have to use mods to get the resolution they desire.

The development team had plans to make a ‘HD’ reboot of the game which was stalled after their Kickstarter campaign gathered less than half of the funds required to make the reboot (only $268,964 of the required $600,000). But Fresh3D did not admit defeat and apparently got rights to create an updated version of the game.

The initial plan was to make a complete reboot of Outcast with remade textures, characters, objects and environment for HD. Sadly that plan won’t be possible now with the Kickstarter campaign not meeting its target. But it’s great to see that Fresh3D has worked on creating an updated version, though it might be far from what they initially planned.

Outcast 1.1 is currently available on Steam. Players who already own the game on GOG will get the new version for free. The game is cheaper when purchased on GOG and comes with a special soundtrack and a bunch of other free goodies. The Steam version of the game has been updated quite often (compared to the GOG version).

Outcast was groundbreaking in its time and it’s nice to see that the developers have not forgot about this title, releasing a new version years after the launch of the original game.
