Gamefreak and The Pokemon Company have given us a sneak peek on the new regions of the newly announced games Pokemon: Sword and Pokemon: Shield. The region where the game takes place is in Galar, a new region which hasn't been seen before. We have only gotten a taste of the Starter Pokemon of the region and not the others.

Here's what we know so far about the new region.

#1 It is based on the Industrial Revolution era of England

The shape of the map is a replica of the British Isle which consists of England, Wales and Scotland. The Nintendo Direct trailer also shows the old Industrial Revolution era trains all across the region.

Pokemon regions have always been based on another location. Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are based on real locations from the Japanese islands. The following games have done the same.

#2 Old Pokemon will return

Unlike Black and White, there will be an older generation of Pokemon that will appear in the wild as well as during battles across the Galar region. This is a good move, as adding too many Pokemons can oversaturate the Pokedex.

#3 It's HUGE

The region of Kalos from Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon was already huge. The Pokemon overworld has become massive now and exploration is more akin to real physics. Although this has been around since X&Y, the Galar region is probably the biggest region in the Pokemon series so far.

Sword and Shield is Pokemon's second game for the Switch after Pokemon Let's Go: Pikachu and Let's Go: Eevee. It is the first game for the Switch that introduces a new generation of Pokemon. The last games were for the 3DS, Pokemon: Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. There is no official release date yet but we can expect it in the last quarter of 2019.
