Scalebound could find new life on the Nintendo Switch, according to rumors

One of the disappointments that come with being a video game fan is seeing a game with a lot of potential get cancelled. Such was the case with PlatinumGames' Scalebound, an ambitious open-world RPG being developed as an Xbox One exclusive. It was cancelled in 2017 after four years in development.

While getting your hopes up when it comes to video games is rarely a good idea, if the current rumors turn out to be true, those who were excited about the dragon-based fantasy epic might have a reason to get pumped up again. Assuming they also own a Nintendo Switch, that is.

Last week, on Game Informer's "Kinda Funny" YouTube show, senior editor Imran Khan made reference to a "game thought to be dead that Nintendo [is] reviving." Now, a report from Nintendo Insider writer Alex Seedhouse, who insists he is "confident in [his] sources", claims that Platinum has revived the project as an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch.

If true, this would be a huge boost for Nintendo's hardware. While the console is by no means struggling in the sales department, the majority of its AAA exclusives have been first party titles. Third party titles for the system have usually consisted of either indie or sports games. A third party exclusive at this level is one of the few things the console lacks.

There's no word on whether or not production will pick up where it left off or starting over from scratch. While the Switch certainly is no spring chicken, it certainly doesn't have the same level of power that the Xbox One - again, the system the title was originally being developed for - has. Chances are, it would have to be scaled back a bit if it even happens at all.

This isn't the first time Nintendo has worked with Platinum to bring a popular franchise to an exclusive home on Nintendo hardware. Bayonetta 2 was a Nintendo Wii U exclusive (and its sequel will also be featured on the Switch), as well as titles like The Wonderful 101 and Star Fox Zero.
