Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - How to easily kill Lady Butterfly

Lady Butterfly
Lady Butterfly

Lady Butterfly will probably the first biggest obstacle in your path in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Of course, that will be the case if you haven't first tried taking down the chained ogre in Ashima Outskirts.

Always (and I mean always) keep one finger on L1 to deflect all the incoming attacks.

To complete the Hirata State mission you need to beat Lady Butterfly and trust me doing that ain't easy. It's not because she's very tough. More so, because most people hadn't figured out the basics of the game till then.

I don't blame you, I myself had no idea what was going on in that fight and how to take her down. I tried every other way and failed miserably, only to realize that I have been playing it wrong, just like you have.

You see Lady Butterfly will prove that this game is not supposed to be played at all like Dark Souls or Bloodborne. It's completely different. And once you figure that out, this mini-boss fight becomes a pretty show of dancing among the fire.

Lady Butterfly has two phases which you probably know and that means she wil come back with even more dangerous ways to kill you the second time. Now, first of all, keep in mind that you absolutely need to keep your guard up all the time because Lady Butterfly is really-really fast.

The Sweeping attack can be evaded by jumping and the air attack by dodging leftwards.

By guard, I meant pressing L1 (on PS4) all the time. This will deflect almost every attack she throws at you and you can put out some damage while she gathers herself. Do that and roll back. Now there are two attacks that you can't simply block away by your sword. You will get aware of these once the big red Kanzi symbol flashes on the screen.

She performs two of such attacks. One is the sweeping attack in which she will thrust herself upon you from the ground. The only way to avoid this is by jumping. Right after that she stops for a second or two, get back and stab her hard.

Now the other attack is when she's up in the air. If you have your camera locked on to her then once the red symbols flashes you need to dodge left side. Once she lands, you can slide onto her and put on some damage to her vitality.

Keep in mind all those things I mentioned above and repeat all the steps nice and slowly. In fact, once you get used to it, you will make it through the first phase without a single hit. Now for the second phase. Here she brings up a new trick to make things difficult things for you but please don't give up and stay patient.

Hiding behind the pillar will protect you from the white beams and the illusionary enemies.

Aside from the attacks I mentioned above, Lady Butterfly will time after time in the second phase call upon numerous illusionary enemies to kill you. Here you can use the Snap Seed you got from the NPC outside and eliminate all the illusions. However if just like me you wasted that Snap Seed, things can still go down your way.

Now once those illusionary enemies appear, go hide far from them behind one of the pillars and Lady Butterfly will call them off. Keep in mind though that if you're near her she would rather attack you.

So go to the completely opposite end of the room from her. Now after she calls off those illusions, it gets converted into numerous white beams that if it strikes you will definitely kill you. But as I mentioned, hiding behind the pillar will protect you from them. You can also act brave and deflect them by your sword but that can be risky.

That's all it takes to be take down Lady Butterfly. Once you grasp all the details mentioned above, Taking her down becomes really fun and easy. Here's hoping it works.
