Mortal Kombat 11 is set to hit store shelves in three months. The latest instalment in the series is expected to be another huge seller for NetherRealm Studios, who has been on fire since relaunching the series in 2011. Between Mortal Kombat and Injustice, Ed Boon and NetherRealm have helped the fighting game side of the industry evolve, especially when it comes to a captivating story mode.

Something that we haven't seen since Mortal Kombat 2011, however, is a tag mode. In that game, there was a 2v2 option, which excited players of games like King of Fighters, Marvel vs Capcom or Capcom vs SNK. A 2 on 2 matchup allowed players to extend combos and get creative in their teams and allowed friends to take on the online side of Mortal Kombat, which was a lot of fun.

One of the reasons that we haven't seen it has to do with the fact that it was one of the least played modes in Mortal Kombat 2011, with players struggling to find matches online. Even in the competitive scene, 2v2 was tossed aside for the more traditional 1v1 matches.

However, with the failure of Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, there's a fanbase out there desperately trying to find a home, and this is the perfect time to capitalize on that.

Many fighting game fans, like YouTuber/Twitch streamer Maximilian Dood, were extremely disappointed in MvC Infinite and felt that the game was basically doomed from the start.

With Capcom fans, who've been let down with both MvC Infinite and Street Fighter 5, looking for something new, NetherRealm Studios definitely has a chance to snag that fanbase while Capcom works on damage control. The best way to do that would be to ease them into the series with something that seems familiar.

Not to mention, while the fighting game competitive scene is massive, with tournaments being shown on ESPN, games like Mortal Kombat have always sold well to casual audiences, and the 2v2 mode would be something to interest them. Back when Mortal Kombat 2011 came out, I had more fun playing 2v2 matchups with my friends, taking on all comers with Smoke and Raiden. It was exciting and chaotic.

Also, while it wasn't the most popular route taken by players, it's not like the Mortal Kombat fanbase hated having the option. When Injustice came out, NetherRealm fans wondered why the option wasn't available but assumed it would make its return in Mortal Kombat X. However, when that didn't happen, there was an outcry. You can still find message boards and Reddit threads dating from its release back then all the way to this year where players are again asking for a tag team mode in Mortal Kombat 11.

It's not a necessity in order to make Mortal Kombat 11 sell well. The game will be successful, regardless of if it includes a 2v2 mode or not. With the continuation of a great storyline, interesting weekly towers, and a great online community, a tag team mode won't make or break the game. However, if it's something that could win over some of those fans still reeling from the letdown of Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, why not give it a shot?
