Sunset Overdrive goes gold ahead of its imminent release

Sunset Overdrive is about to explode onto Xbox One in a colourful shower of zany weapons, curse words and open-world shenanigans. The game has gone gold ahead of it’s release after we were treated to some new screenshots last week.

Sunset Overdrive is an upcoming open world third-person shooter video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Microsoft studios. The game is scheduled to release on October 28, 2014, in America, and on October 31 in Europe. Set in the fictional open world metropolis Sunset City in 2027, players control a fully customizable FizzCo employee who fights the OD'd, humans transformed into monsters after consuming an energy drink. By using their own customised character and a variety of ‘unique’ weapons – including The Dude, a bowling ball-firing armament, and the TNTeddy, a lethal combination of plush and explosive – players will fight to take back the city.

Sunset Overdrive doesn’t just mark Insomniac’s debut on the new generation of console hardware; it’s also the first Xbox-exclusive game from the firm, following more than 15 years of (primarily) PlayStation releases. James Stevenson, community and marketing lead at developer Insomniac Games, says that despite the storied partnership with Sony – last year’s Fuse was the firm’s only non-PlayStation-exclusive console title to date, releasing on both PS3 and 360 – moving across to Microsoft’s new machine was the right choice for Sunset to reach its full potential.

Sunset Overdrive marks a few new steps for Insomniac – new hardware, a new platform and new technology. But it also marks a whole new style of game for the company. A sort of mix between Ratchet and Resistance: colourful, yet violent. So, what do you think about the studio’s latest venture?
