Google has been working with Blizzard to test their AI program Deepmind since 2016. The AI program learns by viewing and studying caches of old games. It initially chose a cache of 65,000 games which is now up to half a million per month.

It has been progressing remarkably well. The first demonstration was in Blizzcon 2018. It was able to defend properly against cheesy or easy tactics such as "cannon rushes". It also had a 50% success rate in defeating the pre-programmed AI at the Insane difficulty level. But work is continuing on it, according to Blizzard.

The last update we got from Blizzard was only in November 2018, 2 months ago. But let this be a reminder that AI programs learn at an exponential rate, due to the sheer processing power they are capable of.

Video game AI is an interesting route that developers are taking. It is also an incredible challenge for AI scientist due to challenges in planning, dealing with uncertainty and spatial reasoning. Most video game AI are usually pre-programmed or purposely given a higher advantage in order to be "insanely difficult".

It will be completely different with Machine Learning AI, which is not the same. Unlike pre-programmed AI, Machine Learning AI actually studies sets of data and studies games that were played by human players. There have been cases where a Machine Learning AI defeated Dota 2 pro player Dendi.

It is tough to say how exactly machine learning programs will be used in a competitive Esports environment. But what we do know is that video games are an excellent way for Machine Learning programs to gather data and to keep testing different sets of data. The future is both scary and exciting!

The update will be streamed later today on Starcraft's Twitch channel and on DeepMind's YouTube Channel.
