Indian football fans will have their eyes, minds, and hearts glued to what transpires inside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, in New Delhi, during the 2017 U-17 FIFA World Cup. As the custom goes for most FIFA tournaments, the national team will play their home matches in the national capital. So lets take a closer look at the schedule, teams, and match timings for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup matches, to be played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, in New Delhi.
Being the home of the national team, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will mostly host matches from Group A during the group stages. Apart from India, the group will also host strong teams like Ghana, Colombia and USA. All the three countries have a rich history of football, and often come up with skilful players who give them the potential to at least go into the knockout stages of the tournament.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is also set to host one match from Group B – Mali vs New Zealand.
Apart from these, the Delhi venue will also host two Round of 16 encounters.
Despite the fact that Delhi, by virtue of being the capital, is one of the biggest cities in the country, FIFA had raised an issue about hosting the matches at the JNS due to the high levels of pollution in the city.
What compounds the problem for the organisers, players and fans, is that October, when the tournament is slated to be held, is a festive period in the country. Large scale celebrations are held throughout the country during this period. The bursting of firecrackers is a tradition during the festive day of Diwali, causing widespread pollution, in and across the city.
It is for this very reason that one the last match in New Delhi is a Round of 16 game on October 16, three days ahead of Diwali.
