Aizawl FC finished fifth in I-League 2017-18

With defending I-League champions Aizawl FC already being eliminated from the ongoing AFC Cup, the north-eastern side will be on the hunt to secure its first continental match win when they face New Radiant SC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday evening.

Aizawl FC was drawn with Maldives’ New Radiant SC, Bangladesh’s Dhaka Abahani and India’s Bengaluru FC in group E of the main draw.

Having lost four of their fixtures, and sharing spoils in the other, Aizawl FC has had a forgettable first outing in the AFC Cup. This fixture will give them an opportunity to finish their campaign with some sort of consolation.

Aizawl FC won their maiden I-League title last season and qualified for the continental fixtures, but their title defence has been very mediocre finishing at the fifth position in the standings.

Not only that, most of the players who played an influential role in the title win migrated to other clubs including Coach Khalid Jamil. Starting the task all over again was a tough ask for the Highlanders.

Meanwhile, New Radiant SC is sitting comfortably at the pole position in Group E with same points as Bengaluru FC but a superior goal difference and has already qualified for the Inter-zone play-off semi-finals.

Although the match will not make a huge difference in the context of the league a win for the men from the Maldives will ensure they finish on the top spot ahead of the Indian club.
