There were four uncapped players in the India squad ahead of their international friendly against Philippines on Friday but only Aibor Khongjee got to make his international bow as the Mohun Bagan central defender started in the 1-1 draw. Khongjee produced a solid performance on his debut and was praised by India coach Wim Koevermans also.

Looking back to his first-ever senior international appearance, Khongjee stated on Saturday, “Yesterday was the biggest day of my life as I realised my dream of playing for India. I would like to thank our national coach for giving me this opportunity and also my teammates for their support. I was a little nervous to start with but as the game progressed I felt good and tried to give my best.”

As per AIFF records, the 25-year-old became the 475th player to represent India at international level. It is a complete turnaround for the player who couldn’t make a mark at East Bengal six years ago.

Khongjee was one of the best Indian defenders last season as he excelled under Karim Bencherifa and thus the centre-back credited the Moroccan coach for transforming his career.

“I give credit to my club coach Karim Bencherifa for this national call-up. I played very well under him last season as I started 24 of our 26 games in the I-League. He gave me the confidence to perform at my very best,” Khongjee said.

The former Shillong Lajong defender admitted that he has his work cut out to become a regular in the India team as there is a huge gulf in class between international football and the I-League.

“There is a big difference between international football and I-League. One has to adapt accordingly and that will only come with more matches. It was difficult against Philippines as they have a good attack but I was always communicating with Arnab (Mondal). I have to keep improving to remain in the national team,” he concluded.
