American Express triumph in Legends Cup finale
The Legends Cup, the biggest corporate tournament with 36 of the biggest teams participating, commenced on a sunny afternoon in Delhi’s Plaza Farms. On the first day of the tournament, which got the eyeballs it deserved, the 36 teams were seeded based on performance. The top 8 teams were competing not only for the Platinum Cup but also had a shot of being ‘Legends’.
Finally it were the two old rivals that met in the final – FIS and American Express. The crowd filled the whole ground cheering for both the teams. The game was nothing short of a treat to the spectators who were hundreds in number.
As the clock ticked down, the game headed to penalties as no team was able to break the deadlock. Both the keepers were in fine form, keeping their teams alive in the tournament. Sadly one team had to lose after coming so close to the title. On this night it was FIS that were left to wonder what went wrong as American Express clinched their 3rd Legends Cup title in 2 years. Jahid Chowdhary, the winning goalkeeper, was adjudged the Man of the Match for his heroics in the penalty shootout.
“We played well but they played better and hence they won. We did not concede even a single goal in the whole tournament and yet we are on the losing side,”said a very dejected Nishant Malik, midfielder of FIS.
The prize distribution ceremony began with the introduction of the chief guest, Mr. Amrit Gopinath and Mr. Rajeev Chettri, Directors in Adidas India Group. Bronze Cup was won by Sapient and SCK Foods were the runners-up. In silver category, Adidas fell short in penalties against Groupon. Gold was clinched by Genpact with Audi taking the runners’ up trophy. The mega prize and a right to be called “Legends” was owned by American Express with FIS coming second best.
In an event done by ITmagia Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Adidas presented cleats, jerseys and many other prizes to all the winners and runners up, whereas Safexpress gave away various goodies to all the participants. Foodport served mouth-watering food with RedBull providing full support to The Legends Cup. ELF Cafe&Bar promised a huge party for the winners of The Legends Cup, whereas the World’s Biggest Online Magazine Sportskeeda were kind enough to cover the whole event.
“This is the best tournament that we have played. Not only that this is the best tournament that happens in the city at present and we are very proud to be associated with it,”said a very jubilant Sonam Wangdi, captain of American Express.
The Best Player for Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum were given to Neeraj Tewathia(Sapient), Karan Khurana(Groupon), Zarif Tariq(Genpact) and Digvijay(American Express) respectively. The Adidas MVP was given to Alistair Cruz of American Express for his overall performance.
With a lot of promises and possibilities The Legends Cup is sure to come again but only to be better than ever.
