What's the story?

The Mohun Bagan gaffer, Sanjoy Sen, underwent a successful open heart surgery today. The Mariners' boss was admitted to a private hospital yesterday due to high breathing problems.

Mohun Bagan laboured to a 1-1 draw against NBP Rainbow AC in the CFL earlier today - their first dropped points in the league this season - but the feelgood factor at the club is the news regarding Sen's health.

In case you didn't know...

Sanjoy Sen is one of the top Indian coaches who is currently working as the head coach of I-League giants Mohun Bagan. Sen brought glory to the club and their fans by winning the I-League in 2014-15. He has also won the Federation Cup in 2015-16, defying the odds.

The heart of the matter

On Tuesday night, Sen felt extreme agony in the chest and was rushed to the hospital. Renowned doctor Kunal Sarkar informed that he’ll have to do an immediate open heart surgery as soon as possible.

Many of the avid Mohun Bagan fans were there to support him in and out of the hospital

Under the leadership of Kunal Sarkar, a group of experienced doctors did the surgery. After seven hours of effort, the surgery was concluded with Sen out of danger

According to Kunal, Sen’s three arteries were blocked and he ensured that it’ll not affect his coaching career. It’s expected that the coach can return to the field after a few weeks rest.

What’s next?

The news that the gaffer’s surgery is successful has made the Mohun Bagan fans happy. Many of the club’s ardent fans were there to pray for him.

However, the Mariners have handed the balance of the CFL title race to East Bengal after their draw today and the result would have come as a bittersweet news for the club and their fans amid Sen's improving health.

Author’s take

Sen would've taken over the reins from Shankarlal Chakraborty after the CFL season ends but whether that is now possible remains to be seen. Chakraborty will be in charge on an interim basis until Sen is back. Having seen his team lose out at the last hurdle in both the I-League and Federation Cup last season, the 56-year-old will look to bounce back next season.
