Dinthar FC are inaugural Mizoram Premier League champions

The inaugural season of the ‘Mahindra 2 Wheelers’ Mizoram Premier League concluded today at Lammual in Aizawl with Dinthar FC winning the first-ever championship.

Dinthar FC defeated FC RS Annexe 3-1 in a fiercely contested ‘Dinthar derby’ today, there-by Dinthar reached 30 points from 14 matches and became the inaugural champions; on the other hand another the other Dinthar locality side in Aizawl FC RS Annexe were relegated to the lower division.

In today’s later match Aizawl FC defeated Mizoram Police, who because of Dinthar FC’s earlier victory ended Mizoram Police’s title hopes. The Policemen had led the league table for most part of the season, but in the end had to settle with the second spot; while 2nd Division I-League team Aizawl FC ended in fifth position.

The champions Dinthar FC received a beautiful trophy and a cash reward of Rs 500,000 (5 lakhs) which is by far the richest sports award in the state of Mizoram.

Dinthar FC winger R. Laldanmawia was named the Best Player of the MPL, he received a scooter from the main sponsors Mahindra 2 Wheelers; while the best players from each position – goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, forward – received a trophy and a cash award of Rs 5,000 each.

The Secretary of MPL Board and the Honorary Secretary of Mizoram Football Association Lalnghinglova Hmar says that, “The first edition of MPL is a tremendous success. The fan following, the media coverage, the performance of the teams and the level of football played is not inferior to any state league in the country.”

He also stated that the second edition of the Mizoram Premier League will be played at night and will attract a bigger crowd as the Mizoram goverment is planning to install floodlights at the venues following the installation of artificial turf.
