Despite losing out by a narrow margin of 2-1 against Colombia in their second Group A encounter of the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, in New Delhi, India won a billion hearts by dishing out a performance that was least expected of them.

The India U17 side, that is playing in a world cup for the first time, succumbed to a tame 3-0 defeat at the hands of USA in their opening fixture, which meant that getting a result against Colombia became all the more important.

The Blue Colts came out all guns blazing against the Colombians, and took the fight to the South Americans in the first half, even managing to hit the post via a Rahul KP volley.

The Colombians, though, came out strongly in the second half, to take the lead through a Juan Penaloza strike. The hosts looked down and out after that.

However, midfielder Jeakson Thounaojam restored parity after nodding in a corner. And thus, history was made. India had scored their first ever goal in a world cup game across any level.

That excitement, however, did not last too long, as Colombia immediately went on to score the winner through Penaloza again, just seconds after Jeakson’s goal.

While this loss leaves India at the bottom of the Group A table, the Blue Colts still have a slim hope of making it through to the Round of 16 stage, as one of the four best third-placed sides, if they can notch up a win against Ghana in their last match.
