Former United SC playmaker Carlos Hernandez has been named in Costa Rica’s 30-man preliminary squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Hernandez was with Kolkata’s United Sports Club (formerly known as Prayag United) in the 2012-13 campaign and helped them finish fourth in the I-League. He formed a great partnership with Nigerian striker Ranti Martins that season and inspired the purple shirts to IFA Shield success.

He spent the 2013-14 campaign with New Zealand’s A-League outfit Wellington Phoenix and had a great season. But Phoenix have released him as Hernandez’s family struggled to settle in Wellington.

Hernandez made two substitute appearances in the 2006 World Cup against Ecuador and Poland. He has won 39 international caps and scored seven goals.

The 32-year-old would be looking to make it to the final 23-man squad for Brazil 2014 where Costa Rica have been drawn in Group D with England, Italy and Uruguay.
