Guwahati to host India's next international friendly

On November 14, 2012, Guwahati’s Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium was supposed to host the India vs Yemen international friendly, but Yemen pulled out at the last moment, leaving India without an opponent to play against.

The Assam Football Association had made arrangements and preparatory work at the venue and on all other fronts for the India vs Yemen match, and now the AIFF has agreed to compensate them with the next friendly match India is set to host on February 6, 2013.

Assam FA secretary and AIFF vice-president Ankur Dutta said about the yet to be finalised opponent: “It will be one from Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines or Oman and it will be a FIFA date match.”

After having hosted the India vs Malaysia match in November 2011 at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium, it would be another big match for Guwahati and the whole North-East, regardless of who Team India takes on.

It would be good exposure for Team India, hopefully a positive result and points in the FIFA world rankings, and the chance for fans from the North-East to see India’s stars like Sunil Chhetri and Gouramangi Singh in action.
