I-League 2017: Nongdamba Naorem scores a Lionel Messi-esque goal for Indian Arrows, watch video
The boxing day match between Indian Arrows FC and Shillong Lajong FC was a memorable one for Arrows player Nongdamba Naorem. The midfielder is currently on loan to the Arrows from Minerva Punjab FC.
With this goal, he helped the Arrows clinch a win over Shillong Lajong, doubling their lead in the 86th minute. Arrows ended up winning the game 3-0, as Jitendra opened the scoring in the 19th minute and Rahul KP bagged the third goal in stoppage time.
Naorem's goal is already being labelled as the goal of the season by fans and pundits alike. The number 16 beat five Shillong defenders before slotting the ball at the back of the net. Naorem also played for India in the FIFA U17 World Cup earlier this year and has the potential to be a star for the senior team in the future.
Nong's strike is already being compared to goals by FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi, as he ran past the entire Shillong back-line, making it 2-0 to Indian Arrows.
Minerva Punjab FC will be pleased to see his progress at Arrows. A couple more performances like this and he could go on to be a regular starter at Punjab in the next season.
Here are some reactions on Twitter after Naorem scored the sensational goal.
Naorem is still only 17 years old and this goal is an indicator of things to come. One can hope that he will fulfill his potential and will score many memorable goals for India in years to come.
