What's the story?

Former Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen has accused the Mohun Bagan fans of spitting him at him during today's I-League match against Chennai City FC.

Sanjoy Sen revealed, "Mohun Bagan fans did spit on me while I was going through the tunnel."

In case you didn't know...

Earlier today, Sanjoy Sen resigned after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat against Chennai City FC at the Mohun Bagan Ground in Kolkata.

Sanjoy Sen managed the Kolkata giants from 2014 and began his tenure successfully bringing home the 2014-15 Hero I-League trophy after a gap of 13 years. Sen also won the Federation cup with Mohun Bagan in 2015-16.

The heart of the matter

Sanjoy Sen announced his resignation at the post-match press conference after his side suffered their first defeat of the season. The Kolkata giants were on a three-match draw streak and Sen was under immense pressure to carve out a win at their home ground.

Sen has claimed that as he and the team were walking back to their dressing room after the match, some Mohun Bagan fans present in the stands near to the tunnel spat on him. During the post-match press conference, some angry Bagan fans broke into the press area and hurled bricks and stones, but were dealt with by the security present.

Mohun Bagan played seven matches under Sanjoy Sen with two wins, four draws and one loss with the highlight being the Kolkata derby win at the Vivekananda Yubabharati Kridangan.

What's next?

No official announcement has been made regarding the successor for Sanjoy Sen from the Mohun Bagan management.

Author's take

Sanjoy Sen has been one of the most consistent coaches in the Hero I-League and such an unruly behaviour from the fans is a disgrace, by all terms. It is no secret that Kolkata fans are highly passionate about their football and expect good results from their teams, but, resorting to such antics is not at all justifiable.
