The Indian women's national team dropped down in latest FIFA Rankings

What’s the story?

The Indian women's national football team was placed on rank 59th in the world in the official FIFA World Ranking, which was published on Friday.

This means that they have dropped down two places in the last three months, having been placed at 57 in December last year.

In case you did not know

The FIFA Women's Ranking is published every three months by the governing body of the sport, with the updates coming in the months of March, June, September and December.

The heart of the matter

The Indian team did not play a match in the last three months and as a result, have now dropped two places. The Indian women’s national team is now ranked at joint 59th in the world together with Peru and Israel. The Indian eves currently have 1409 points, the same as last month. They stay in 13th position in the Asian (AFC) Women’s rankings and occupies the numero uno spot in South Asia.

The United States leads in the first FIFA Women’s World Ranking of 2018, while Germany’s disappointing show at the SheBelieves Cup sees them fall out of the top two for the first time since June 2009. England moved up in the ranking to achieve the second rank for the first time.

What’s next

The next edition of the rankings will be published on June 22, 2018, and it remains to be seen where the Indian team will be placed in three months' time.

Author’s take

Despite a slight fall this time around, the team will certainly be hungry to move up the charts in the coming months. Here's hoping that their future endeavours prove to be successful and they bring back more accolades for the nation.
