Is Indian football heading in the right direction?

If one follows the news and developments in Indian football over the last few weeks, then they will get only get a mixed picture on where it is heading, and in a way this is what sadly has been the case for many, many years…

The AIFF’s Dutch Technical Director Rob Baan has been critical of India’s low FIFA World Rankings, and also has questioned the technical abilities of Indian footballers due to the lack of the right coaching at a young age.

I feel that one thing needs to be said. Compared to 10-12 years ago, a lot of things in Indian football are better these days, but the pace of development continues to be far too slow compared to other nations across Asia and around the world.

Often, the mistake made is the viewing of India as a nation rather then what it is – a sub-continent. As such, one needs a different approach for development across the nation, which cannot be at the same level and type across India.

Also arises the question if the talent base currently is better then what was about a decade back. If not, then are the right kids being scouted? Or are those with real potential not being spotted?

Talents like I.M. Vijayan or Baichung Bhutia made it not due to any system, but owing to their talent, despite there being no system in place, forget infrastructure and coaching.

Loads of work needs to be put in now, and only after a few years can one really say which way Indian football is heading.

My only hope and wish is for it to go in the right direction…
