ISL 2017/18: FC Pune City set to sign India U23 international Sarthak Golui

ISL side FC Pune City is set to secure the services of India U23 international Sarthak Golui for the upcoming season, league sources tell Sportskeeda with only the medical pending. Golui, who had represented Mohun Bagan earlier this season in the Calcutta Football League has, in fact, already travelled to Pune to complete his medical before signing on the dotted lines.

The terms of the contract, however, remain unknown for the time being.

Speaking about the transfer a source told Sportskeeda on the condition of anonymity, "The deal is as good as done and only the medical remain. Golui caught the eye of the Pune hierarchy thanks to his impressive performances in the U23 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers in July.

Golui, who was part of the AIFF Elite Academy was with Mohun Bagan for the last two seasons. A centre-back by occupation, the 19-year-old first shot into the limelight playing right-back for the Mariners in the after impressing in his trials in November, 2015 where he became a household name thanks to his steady shows at the back and powerful long throws.

The 6ft 2in tall defender then went on to make his I-League bow on 9 January, 2016 against Aizawl. He, however, remained a fringe player for the Mariners.

Many thought that this would be his breakthrough season for Mohun Bagan but he remained an afterthought for most games with Eze Kingsley and Kingshuk Debnath manning the centre of the rearguard for the Marin

The teenager's performances at the recently concluded AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers saw him displace Lalruatthara, the captain for the opening game and then keep his place for the two subsequent games.

These two games saw India fall 0-1 to Qatar before thumping Turkmenistan 3-1 in the final game.
