The Italian came through the AS Roma academy and started playing for the first team at the tender age of 19. He made 60 appearances for his boyhood club, several of them coming at the European stage as well.

He helped his club win the Coppa Italia in two consecutive seasons, 2006-07 and 2007-08 while he did the cup double in 2007 as Roma won the Supercopa Italiana as well.

After that, he moved on to Sienna and made 70 appearances for them. In 2010, he moved to Sampdoria and made 41 appearances, his highest ever in a single season. Having made 22 appearances for the Italian national U-21 team, he got a call-up to the senior side but never made it to the pitch for the Azzurri.

He signed for Mainz in 2015 but left on 30th January 2017 and has been a free agent since then. A big money offer from Delhi could see the former Roma make a move to India.
