FC Pune City registered their first points of ISL 2017 on board as they thumped the reigning Champions ATK by 4-1 away from home. Ranko Popovic’s side, who lost their first match to Delhi Dynmanos, put forward an impressive display in their second game.

Speaking to the press in his pre-match address, the Serbian coach was quite firm in his belief that his team had what it takes to beat ATK and refused to adjudge ATK as favorites and it seems that his boys repaid his faith.

“I told earlier in the press conference how we will try to play the same type of game. We were organised today and played more compact like a team unlike the last game. I told the boys to play as a unit and they did just that. The second goal changed the game. I didn't expect a 4-1 result. We played very smartly and our game was effective,” said the coach.

Star striker and last season’s top goalscorer Marcelinho caught the eye after putting in a shift with a splendid performance, not only scoring two goals but also setting up his teammates and coach Popovic was quite happy as he spoke about the Brazilian’s role.

“Captain’s performance was good tonight. He’s one of the best players in his position in the league and he's one of the most experienced players in the side. Last game his performance wasn't up to the mark but he played very well today and I’m very happy,” he said.

Although quite happy about his side’s performance, the Stallion’s coach believes that it’s too early to judge ATK or any side for that matter and that every team has a long way to go with just two matches down.

He said, “I don't want to comment on ATK. We are jealous of them too. They were champions last times and they have that that tag that we want. It's not correct to judge them on one game. They have 16 more games just like us.

“It's good. It's nice especially when you win against the champions. The ambiance was fantastic here and I'm very impressed. We went out and tried to enjoy the game and thanks to God we won. We will try to keep the morale high and get points next game,” concluded a smiling Popovic, visibly happy with his side’s performance tonight.
