What’s the story?

Kerala Blasters goalkeeper Paul Rachubka was voted by the fans as the Player of the Month for November.

In a picture posted on the official Twitter handle of the ISL, Rachubka - who has been very good in goal for the Blasters so far this season - can be seen with the Player of the Month award.

Speaking to the presenters ahead of the match against Chennaiyin FC, he said, “It feels fantastic (to be voted as the Player of the Month). Thanks to everyone who voted for me. Now we can go on and hopefully get three points tonight.”

In case you didn’t know…

Rachubka, an American-born English goalkeeper, started out his career at Manchester United. He has played at a host of English clubs with his most popular stints coming at Huddersfield Town and Blackpool. The 36-year-old has also represented England at under-16, under-18 and under-20 levels.

He joined Kerala Blasters before the start of this season after spending a year with Bury following his release by Bolton.

The heart of the matter

Although the Kerala Blasters have not enjoyed the best of starts in this year’s campaign, Rachubka’s performances between the sticks have caught the eye of many. The shot-stopper has already made some world-class saves and earned a reputation in India.

Before the season started, many had wondered how he would settle in at his new clubs. After all, his blunders for Leeds United are infamous and can be found all over the internet.

Three home games later, though, Rachubka has emerged as a fan favourite among the Manjappada, ahead of even Dimitar Berbatov. That the Blasters were able to draw their opening two games despite failing to score was largely due to the Englishman’s heroics.

What’s next?

Kerala Blasters have not started the season as they would have liked to but they would be keen to generate some momentum hereon. As for Rachubka, he will look to keep his place in the starting line-up and claim more clean sheets along the way.

Author’s take

Rachubka’s performances over the last month have been superb. The goalkeeper has proved his worth and it is only fitting that he won the Player of the Month award for November.
