ISL franchise Chennaiyin FC's lead striker Jeje Lalpekhlua became the first Indian player to be the highest scorer of an Indian Super League champion side.

In case you didn't know...

Jeje Lalpekhlua is a longtime Indian international who made his debut for the national side in the year 2011 after playing for the India U-19 and U-23 sides. He began his youth club career at the Pune FC academy and played for the senior side for five seasons which included a loan spell at Pailan Arrows.

Jeje has been playing for Chennaiyin FC since the first season of the Indian Super League when he was on loan from Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan. He signed permanently in 2015 and was retained this year as well after performing consistently through the years.

The heart of the matter

Indian international striker Jeje Lalpekhlua became the first Indian top scorer of an ISL champion side as Chennaiyin FC emerged victorious over Bengaluru FC in the ISL final today.

The 27-year-old striker, who is referred to as the 'Mizo Sniper' played in all the twenty matches this season for Chennaiyin FC. Jeje scored nine goals and one assist for the South Indian club. The next closest goalscorer was Mailson Alves who managed to score four goals in his nineteen matches during the season.

Stiven Mendoza was the top scorer for Chennaiyin FC back in 2015 when the club won their first ISL title.

What's next?

Jeje became a two-time winner with the Chennaiyin FC side after they had won the competition back in 2015 defeating FC Goa in the final.

Jeje Lalpekhlua is one of the most prominent strikers in the Indian Super League and has been a consistent performer for the Chennaiyin side. He had a significant improvement over last year when he had managed just three goals.
