The Legends Cup was back again this month as Hyderabad played host to the latest edition of India’s premier 5-a-side football tournament. Maverick Solutions etched their name in the history of the Legends Cup, becoming only the third team to qualify for the national finals for the 2nd time in as many years.
The tournament leg which consisted of 12 teams started the league phase on June 11. And at the end of the first league stage, 8 of the best teams were left to fight it out in the knockout stages at Astro Park, Hyderabad.
Sunday, the 12th of June, was slated to provide Hyderabad with footballing frenzy as the top team clashed for a place in the National Finals and it certainly did not disappoint. After knocking off their opponents in emphatic fashion, Maverick Solutions and Deloitte clashed in the semis, in what turned out to be the game of the tournament.
The game saw an astute defensive performance from Deloitte against the free flowing Maverick team. With the game looking like heading for a draw at the end of regulation time, Deloitte had a golden opportunity to script a famous victory only to see Rahul shoot wide with the goal at his mercy. The team from the Accounting giants were made to rue their opportunity as Maverick Solutions romped to the finals, winning the game on penalties.
Up against them in the final was DE Shaw who overcame Accenture in a game that saw one red card along with two yellows being flashed to go with the three goals.
The final, however, was a one-sided affair as Maverick solutions danced their way to a 4-0 victory.
“It’s a great win. We had to face a lot of problems in the last year but we have come back stronger and would want to continue the winning run into the National finals in Delhi,”said Maheshwar Singh of Maverick Solutions.
Uday Kumar was adjudged the player of the tournament for scoring an astounding 12 goals in 5 games. Meanwhile, Pratiksh Jain the keeper of Maverick Solution was adjudged the keeper of the tournament after he kept clean sheets in both the semis as well as the final.
The tournament will now move to the mecca of Indian football, Kolkata for its next leg.
