Casillas to follow other big names to MLS?

MLS club New york City FC are interested in bringing Iker Casillas to the big apple. The Spanish International has been plying his trade with Porto since signing for them in 2015 from Real Madrid.

The news comes after recent speculation that the goalkeeper might not remain as their first choice for much longer. Casillas is under contract with the Portuguese side until the end of 2016/17 season but Manchester City’s sister club are looking to bring him in now rather than waiting until his contract expires.

The 34-year-old made over 500 appearances for Los Blancos and is considered as one of the best goalkeepers of all time. In his 16 years at the club, the man from Mostoles won five La Liga titles and three Champions league crowns. He also won the Copa Del Rey and the Fifa Club World Cup with the Spanish Giants.

Casillas also won several honours in International football. He captained the Spainish national team to three consecutive major titles winning the Euros in 2008, lifting the World Cup in 2010 in South Africa and retaining the Euros in 2012.

Casillas became captain of the Madrid side in 2010 after the departure another famous player who donned the white of Madrid, Raul. In January 2013, Casillas suffered an injury which kept him out of the team for a while. This prompted then Manager Jose Mourinho to buy Diego Lopez who was made the first choice keeper.

After returning from injury, Casillas failed to get into the first team. Even after the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti he usually found himself on the bench as Diego Lopez continued to be the first choice between the sticks

Even though he played all the Copa del Rey and Champions league games for Madrid they decided to sell the player in 2015. The move brought about heavy criticism after it was claimed that the keeper was being forced out by Florentino Perez.

Recently Casillas has not always been named as the first choice keeper at Porto. In a recent away game to Vitória de Guimarães in the league Casillas was blamed for conceding the goal that led to their defeat. The interest from the MLS side has been reported by Spanish website El Economista. If the move does go through Casillas will link with his old Spanish team mate ex-Barcelona man David Villas as well as ex-Athletic Bilbao right-back Andoni Iraola. Ex-Chelsea star Frank Lampard is also another high profile name that represents the club.
