What's the story?

The Super Cup 2018 is finally making its debut in India in March 2018, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirming the same at a meeting on Monday in Delhi.

Right after the announcement of the first edition of this event, a tweet suggesting a game to come up with an innovative name for the tournament was announced. Twitteratis took no time in coming up with their creativity, which turned out to be a thread of hilarious tweets that christened the Cup.

In case you didn't know...

Looked upon as the main club knockout competition of India, this tournament is set to feature 16 teams from both the Indian Super League (ISL) and the I-League. The Federation Cup that was the knockout tournament earlier, is being replaced with the Super Cup.

The heart of the matter

Few hours into the announcement of the name guessing game, Twitteratis poured in their tweets for a laugh riot. A game suggesting people to guess the name of the cup was tweeted by Football News India.

Coming up with its own hilarious title "inconsequential cup", this tweet led to numerous other rib-tickling tweets.

As seen in the above titles given to the upcoming Super Cup, it can quite be concluded that the football fans, despite looking forward to an all-new tournament, do have a reason to ridicule yet another competition between the Indian teams.

What's next?

The Indian Super League will see its qualifiers taking off between 12th-31st March 2018. The final is expected to take place on the 22nd of April. The venue is not yet decided, but a neutral one such as Cuttack or Kochi has been chalked out.

Author's take

Despite the hilarity of the tweets, the Indian Super Cup will be an interesting watch with some of India's biggest teams being pitted against each other.
