Sanjoy Sen’s Mohun Bagan go head-to-head against giant-killers Aizawl FC in the Hero Federation Cup final at The Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati on Saturday. The Mariners are looking to win their first silverware of the season whereas Aizawl FC will hoping to salvage their own season which has seen them get relegated from the I-League.

With Bagan’s Jeje Lalpekhlua in a purple patch of form, top scoring with 6 goals in the tournament so far, and Haitian Sony Norde’s last match before leaving for the Copa America Centenario, the Mizoram teams main aim will be to stop the two attackers.

It has been a near perfect outing for The Mariners as they romped through the semis beating Shillong Lajong 5-0 on aggregate, with Jeje scoring a hattrick in the first leg. They had earlier won 7-2 on aggregate against Salgaocar FC in the quarters.

Asked if Mohun Bagan go into the finals as favourites, taking into account their outstanding form, Sanjoy Sen said in a press release on Friday, "I don't agree. You need to look back at Aizawl FC's performance against Bengaluru FC in the Federation Cup. You also need to look back at their performance against us in the I-League when they defeated us and halted our unbeaten run.""Hence, it will be foolish to brand Mohun Bagan as the favourites. Anyone can beat anybody on a particular day. Aizawl FC will be a tough clash and if we want to win, we have to deliver."

Aizawl faced Mohun Bagan this season in the I-League in the opening round of the tournament where they had lost 3-1 via a Cornell Glen brace. However, they managed to take revenge in the return leg at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium where Aizawl ended Bagan’s 11 match unbeaten run by winning 2-1, Joel Sunday and Lalchawnkima being the scorers for Aizawl.

This is Aizawl FC’s maiden Federation Cup Final appearance and they’ll be hoping to emerge on top against the thirteen-time champions. Aizawl drew 2-2 against Sporting Clube de Goa which saw them progress to the final via the away goal rule.

They had earlier stunned the I-League champions, and one of the favourites of the tournament, Bengaluru FC in the Quarter Finals beating them 5-3 on aggregate. Aizawl have shown great determination in the tournament in spite of having a poor I-league campaign which will see them playing in I-league 2 next season.

"We have defeated Mohun Bagan before and we can defeat them again. We are all united for the cause and we are all hoping that the result sways in our favour," Aizawl coach Jahar Das said ahead of the final.

"We will be playing as if it will be the last day on Earth. Obviously, we have to be at our best against Mohun Bagan," he added.

"I have been vocal in my appreciation of the players. I told them that your value as players has risen because of your performance in the Federation Cup. I have also told that if you can raise your performance to a higher level in the Final, your value will further increase," Das said.

Aizawl FC’s coach Jahar Das has been brilliant tactically with his team in the tournament. They will be wanting to make amends after their I-League relegation and will depend heavily on striker Joel Sunday to deliver with Aizawl skipper David Lalrinmuana set to miss out because of a red card offence in the semis.

Mohun Bagan’s attacking quadruplet of Glen, Katsumi, Norde and Jeje are expected to go all guns blazing in the summit clash. Mohun Bagan midfielder Pronay Halder and defender Kingshuk Debnath are expected to be back for the final after being rested in the second leg of the semi-final.
