Breakpoint is clearly meant to be a redesign of Waypoint and while this is common practice for many characters in the game's catalogue, Breakpoint's time of release can give us a hint of how Breakpoint came to be. The character was released during Chapter 1 Season 9, a season that takes place in a much more technologically advanced age.
It is fair to assume that among those technological advancements, some were malicious in nature, causing Waypoint to become digitally corrupted and turn into Breakpoint.
