What’s the story?

According to a report in DreamTeam FC, a new cheat in FIFA 17 is giving several gamers serious headaches. The cheat called “99OVR” enhances every single player in your team. In fact, as the nomenclature suggests, the overall rating of every player in your team is boosted to 99.

Not only overall, but each individual skill rating also goes up to 99, thus making the team near invincible.

One of the gamers wrote in a FIFA Forum: “I just played someone with all players in the range of 95-99. I was wondering why his NIF Kévin Gameiro was outrunning Kalidou Koulibaly and Antonio Rüdiger so easily. I found the answer… Lost in overtime.”

Another wrote: “With this trainer, there is no reason to play this game and no reason to work hard to hunt good players.”

In case you didn’t know…

Since the release of FIFA 17, several gamers have tried to find a way to score goals from every corner or free kick, or to save every penalty kick. In fact, some of them have even come up with several techniques for these things. However, a cheat that makes every player virtually stronger than even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo was unheard of.

The heart of the matter

The heightened ratings are extremely damaging to game mode, in particular, the Ultimate Team mode. Players need to build their squads patiently and earn the players. But the cheat makes it possible that even a 10K squad is better than a five million FUT-coin team.

And the worst thing about this is there is no way to tell that someone is using the cheat beforehand. Even though many gamers have reached out, EA Sports have done next to nothing to control the anomalies. All they have done is ban a few gamers who are using the cheat, but no hard measures were taken.

Also, there is apparently no way of reporting the issue as you do not have solid proof. A new patch has removed the option of viewing the opposition’s team and so you cannot take any screenshots.

Author’s take

The very idea of using cheat codes in a game is off-putting. It destroys the purpose of the game itself by providing the cheaters with an advantage over the fair players. If you want to win, play fair and win. There is no honour in winning by using cheats and then bragging about it to your friends.
