Glorious Leader! Kickstarter campaign cancelled after hacks

It seems that The Interview isn’t the only thing taking digs at North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Moneyhorse Games upcoming 16 bit sidescroller titled ‘Glorious Leader!’ will feature the North Korean dictator taking down the American Army. Sadly, the studio has run into some hacking problems lately.

The developers had launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the game, which was initially slated to release in November last year. But the Kickstarter had to be cancelled due to a string of attacks by hackers. According to a post by one of their studio’s spokesperson, Moneyhorse had “no reason” to believe that they were hacked by North Korea or any of its affiliates. The studio also reassured its users that none of their information has been compromised. The only thing that seems to have been affected by the hack is the game itself. Moneyhorse stated the hackers "destroyed data pertaining to Glorious Leader! and other projects we had in development".

It seems that the attackers were imitating the recent hacks on Sony, which were probably perpetrated due to the recent release of the controversial comedy ‘The Interview’. Moneyhorse eventually had to shut down their Kickstarter campaign after the recent hacks. They posted the following update on the Kickstarter page:

“As many of you know, over the holidays we were victims of a hack inspired by the attack on Sony. The hackers destroyed data pertaining to Glorious Leader! and other projects we had in development and locked us out of our own computers and wesbite. The timing couldn't have been worse as it hampered our ability to attend to the Kickstarter project. We realize that we also made mistakes in our pledge levels and rewards. It is now evident that our funding goals will not be met, so we are cancelling our Kickstarter campaign.”

Apparently this is not the first time that the project has been targeted. The update mentions that the developers had also received threats:

"This is not the first time we have been targeted because of Glorious Leader! Between the hacking and other threats, we think it is time to reevaluate our commitment to Glorious Leader! We thank our fans and supporters, and we are sorry to let you down."

The Kickstarter managed to gather $16,816 in funds. The future of ‘Glorious Leader!’ seems rather bleak right now but hopefully Moneyhorse does not give up on the project.
