Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris: Game Review

Shayak

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is a direct sequel to the 2010 Lara Croft: Guardian of Light. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris(ToS) marks the re-entry of Lara Croft in the adventure business.

The game again combines facts and fiction and has tried to present a story that will both humor us and enthrall us. What differentiates this game from the other adventure games is that this is not a button smashing video game. This game wants you to think and act accordingly.

It is much more about solving mysteries and puzzles rather than firing shotguns on the skeletons rising from the dead. This is video gaming through the lens of Raiders of the Lost Ark, which in turn looked to the old serial adventures with such evocative names as Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe and Jungle Girl. The jungles and the universes change, but the unfettered drama of these classic stories still lives.

Synopsis

Our dear Lara has got a history of wreckage. Whenever she’s out on a mission for finding ancient artifacts and unknowingly touches something, that “unknowing” thing suddenly changes everything and a series of havoc starts.

Like Guardians of Light, this game also focuses on the old school Tomb Raider games. and this time its the Egyptian god of darkness Set who gets partially freed from mystical entrapment after Lara and competing explorer Carter Bell remove the Staff of Osiris from its appointed place.

This leaves Lara with only one option. She has to team up with gods Isis and Horu and must gather up the bodily remains of sun god Osiris so that he can reincarnate and stop Set from doing dark-and-vaguely-evil-things to the Earth. This marks the basic layout of the story.

Gameplay

The gameplay of this game is also similar to that of Guardians of Light. It provides a good opportunity as any to think about the various elements that make up the Tomb Raider mystique and attract its different groups of fans.

The puzzles are a really big factor in the game. You will either enjoy it to the core or you will get annoyed by it because they are either interesting or very difficult to crack. Boss fights are fun.

Boss encounters require a bit of creative thinking as well, requiring you and your partners to coordinate tossing bombs and raising platforms lest you succumb to the scarabs, skeletons, and bipedal alligators that swarm you all the while.

In the game, players control Lara in isometrically-presented, interlocking environments, engaging in quick-reflex arcade action where stealth never comes into play. Playable characters wield a mix of magical abilities and collectible weapons, along with discoverable amulets and rings that bestow helpful and deleterious characteristics like faster movement and regenerating health.

These buffs activate when you rack up kills or collect enough gems. You need to fend of the filthy creatures who come to attack you using various pistols, grenade launchers, and other weapons, but firefights aren't very difficult, unless you strive to meet the optional challenges found in each level, or seek out combat tests in the hub area once you complete the four-hour story adventure.

it's not too tough to deal with the bad guys when they appear, however, making inventory management an occasional diversion rather than a deep and necessary feature.

Final Verdict

If you really like Tomb Raider series and you have played all the games in the series, then you will find this one satisfying. This is a little setoff from the last release Tomb Raider, which released in 2013 and focused on how Lara Croft became Tomb Raider.

In this game, the supernatural elements are there which are fun and illogical at the same time. I mean will you really expect that you have awakened an ancient Egyptian god who is hell bent on destroying the world and you are being assisted by two more gods on your journey to stop the evil force.

The story is not captivating and the truth to be told the visuals look a little outdated. But the gameplay is still good and will keep you hooked for a few hours. The single player campaign is hardly of 6-8 hours and is not difficult. So my last words? Give it a try only if you are a die-hard Lara Croft fan.
