Minecraft hits nearly one million players on PC

Minecraft may soon be taking over Dota 2’s position of being the most played PC game (according to the Steam’s stats page). Mojang now has gained access to concurrent player statistics and this has revealed some startling figures. According to Mojang’s Nathan Adams’ recent tweet, over 998,000 players were on Minecraft on January 9th and this wasn’t even during peak hour. So this means that over one million players were on Minecraft last Friday which is a pretty huge number for the indie game.

Adams has stated that this number only accounts for Mac, Windows, and Linux players with versions 1.3 or higher of Minecraft. The game is also available for the android and windows phone as well as the Xbox and PlayStation consoles. So this means that the number of people playing the game is probably a lot higher than one million, that is if we take into account offline players, console players and even those who own pirated copies or older versions of the game. This is a fairly huge number compared to the Steam stats of Dota 2, which is yet to pass the one million concurrent player mark.

Minecraft has done amazingly well and has come a long way since its launch back in 2009. The game has sold millions of copies worldwide and was purchased by Microsoft for a staggering $2.4 billion last year. One of Mojang’s developers, Johan, Bernhardsson, has revealed that the mobile version of Minecraft has already sold over 30 million copies.

There are currently over 998,000 people playing Minecraft right at this moment. It is not even remotely close to being a peak time.
