PSN down after DDOS attack from Lizard Squad

The PSN network has been under a series of DDOS lately from the notorious Lizard Squad, a hacker group from Finland. The network went down yesterday due to the attack. The group has not given a reason for the attack. It seems that the group had run a campaign earlier that asked its followers to retweet or favourite whether it should take down PSN or Xbox Live, with most of its followers requesting that PSN should be taken down resulting in the DDOS attack.

The Lizard Squad had claimed responsibility for taking down the network on their official twitter account. They sent the following tweet around the time of the attack:

Some of these tweets which asked the squad to take down the PSN have since been deleted.

This is not Lizard Squad’s first attack as they reportedly took down Xbox Live twice this past week. So this time their followers felt it was PSN’s turn. They have also warned of more attacks throughout December, as they plan to go on DDOS spheres for more services. The attackers have not given a reason for this except that they want to play Christmas Grinch, as seen in their twitter description.

So it looks like PSN and Xbox Live are in for a lot more trouble from the group in the weeks to come. Other servers may also be targeted as well, if the attackers feel like it. The PSN is now up and working however, so hopefully these servers will be able to withstand the onslaught from the group.
