Shadowrun first look coming to Kickstarters in January

The new concept art for the upcoming Shadowrun project

Harebrained Schemes, the developers behind cyberpunk fantasy franchise Shadowrun Returns, will be showcasing a “new setting” for their upcoming Shadowrun project. They have also hinted that the next instalment of the series might just be set in Hong Kong. The developers stated the following on their Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter page.

"Here's a piece of look & feel concept art for our new setting. We'll show how it translates into Shadowrun's isometric gameplay view when our Kickstarter launches in January!"

The Shadowrun developers had stated earlier this month that they would launching a new Kickstarter in January to raise money for their upcoming Shadowrun project. And it looks like the new expansion or standalone project is set in Hong Kong this time, which seems like a pretty good choice for a cyberpunk game.

Also the developers had sent out a survey to their Kickstarter backers in 2012 that asked which location they would like to see added to Shadowrun Returns. The city with the most votes was Berlin, which was then featured in Shadowrun: Dragonfall. Hong Kong came in second so it’s pretty likely that it will now be featured in the upcoming title.

Here is Harebrained Schemes description of Hong Kong in their previous survey in 2012:

“Hong Kong finds itself now as an independent city/state in 2050. Both ancient and modern Hong Kong seems to be at peace on the same island. It’s corporate sponsored City Center rivals any in the world for splendor and corporate intrigue. All the megacorps are there as well as all smaller ones that love to think they can play with the big boys (and maybe even steal a secret or two).

Yet, just outside the city center you will find ancient temples and shrines. Each one situated on the many dragon lines that cross the island. Dragon lines are mysterious and powerful paths of magic that the monks claim hold the secrets of the great dragons themselves. Protecting the monks and running the underworld are the mysterious syndicate called the Triads – gangs that control their island, protect their secret masters and really, really hate the Yakuza.”

Shadowrun Returns raised about $1.8 million during their last Kickstarter campaign back in 2012. The game was then released for the PC and mobile platforms in 2013.
