The Last of Us sequel "put on ice" as Naughty Dog team concentrates on Uncharted 4: A Thiefs End

Naughty Dog’s action-adventure survival horror title The Last Of Us released back in 2013 exclusively for the PS3. The game received critical acclaim for its characters, emotional depth, and graphics and has left fans begging for a sequel ever since. But it looks like the game will not be getting its rumoured sequel anytime soon as the developers are too busy focusing on the studios upcoming Uncharted 4.

Two key developers from Naughty Dog, Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann, have told Game Informer that the team is too occupied with the PlayStation 4 exclusive Uncharted 4: A Theifs End with “blinders on”.

“We’re 110 percent in Uncharted 4 territory now. Blinders on, make this awesome.”

As for a possible The Last of Us sequel, Druckmann states it is still a 50/50 shot right now. Quite a few fans feel that the game is better suited as a one-off title and Druckmann seems to agree with this sentiment but also mentioned that they have thought about possible ideas for a sequel, though the brainstorming is on hold right now while the team works on Uncharted 4.

“We totally get it, because we have those same feelings as well. We have brainstormed sequel ideas for The Last of Us, and we’ve brainstormed ideas for new games, but all of that is put on ice right now while we work on Uncharted 4.”

So whether it is a sequel to the current game, a new story in the same universe, or a possible DLC for the original, it isn’t likely to happen anytime soon. Druckmann further stated that the project is a “big if” at this point and it is still a “big assumption” to believe if there ever will be a sequel.

Finally, when asked if a sequel will be made without them on the team, Straley replied that “He [referring to Druckmann] would not be OK with that.” So if there ever is a sequel, fans can be at peace knowing the original developers are at the helm.
