Suresh Kalmadi, the Head of the CWG Organizing Committee has been finally arrested after a long standing interrogation conducted by the CBI. Mr. Kalmadi was accussed of corruption and the particluar charges are many. These include teaming up with a Swiss firm that supplied the Timing-Scoring-Results System (TSR) for the Games at inflated prices. Suresh Kalmadi, who was also a member of the INC prior to the Games but was sacked after allegations of corruption charges. He has been under public scrutiny prior to the holding of the event.

Once the Games were conducted in a haphazard manner, the CBI started investigating him on various accusations which have now turned against him. Kalmadi and other members of the organizing committee, some of whom have also been arrested earlier ignored reasonable bids for various equipments necessary for the holding of the Games.

The immediate case in which he has been proved guilty is the corrupt management of the Queen’s Baton Relay. A firm called AM films was traded with for providing services such as portable toilets, big TV screens and means of transportation. Kalmadi has confessed that no contract was processed for this purpose however he said that last minute action did not allow the time for such activity. The dubious nature of dealings and with the evidence of some e-mails sent by Mr. Kalmadi he has been now nailed.

Interestingly, Suresh Kalmadi was booed by the Indian public on the day of the Opening ceremony of the games when he gave his formal address as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee. Various delays happened during the preparation leading upto the game and the Pm himself had to take charge ultimately.

The political parties have all made him an untouchable. The opposition welcomed this arrest calling it a revenge and redemption for the Indian Sports Community who did not deserve such corruption in an even meant to enhance India’s honour in the Sporting world.
