After doing well in the shoot off to qualify for the final round, Joydeep had his task cut out, facing competition from such renowned shooters such as Niccolo Campriani and Sergey Martynov. But his qualification score was always going to be a hindrance as there was a gap of 5 points between him and Sergey, who had finished with a perfect score of 600/600. Even Cox, who finished with a score of 599/600. The only possible medal that Joydeep could aim was for the bronze as he was just behind Rajmond Debevec by one point.
The 8 shooters would have 10 shots to fire and it was imperative that Joydeep score as high as possible to ensure that he was in the reckoning for a medal. He was consistent with his shots in all the 10 rounds, with all scoring in the 10′s. But Debevec matched him for every shot and was able to fend off the challenge from Joydeep. In the end, the qualification scores proved to be the deciding factor as Debevec finished at 701.1 and Joydeep finished at 699.1, the difference between them being the one extra point that Debevec had scored in the qualifying stage.
Although Joydeep could not win a medal, it was a good performance from him and will keep him in good stead for the future. Like the Sports Minister had tweeted, he is a bright prospect for the future!
