Day 5 of the 2016 Rio Olympics proved to be yet another mixed affair for the Indian contingent with the archers once again impressing with their showing while the shooters continued to disappoint.
Archery
Bombayla Devi marched into the Round of 16 in the Women's Individual archery event after putting in two fine performances in the Round of 64 and Round of 32. She defeated Laurence Baldauff and Lin Shih-chia in the two matches respectively, both with identical scores of 6-2, to move into the last 16.
Deepika Kumari also shrugged off her disappointing showing in the team event with a good performance in her Round of 64 match, beating Kristine Esebua 6-4. She then followed that up by defeating Guendanila Sartori 6-2 in the Round of 32 match.
Shooting
In the shooting range, however, there was massive disappointment for Jitu Rai, perhaps India's biggest medal hope. After looking well within range of qualifying for the 50m Air Pistol final, he lost out in the final two shots of qualification to finish 12th. Jitu has thus ended his Rio 2016 campaign without a medal, much to the dismay of Indian fans.
Prakash Nanjappa, the other shooter in the fray, finished 25th.
Hockey, weightlifting and judo
There wasn't much cheer from the hockey turf either as the Indian women's hockey team lost 6-1 to Australia in their group encounter. The weight lifting and judo contingents also didn’t provide any joy, even though Satish Sivalingam put in a competitive performance in his Men’s 77kg category. Avtaar Singh, the lone judo contender from India, lost 2-1 to a member of the Refugee Olympic team, Popole Misenga.
Boxing
Manoj Kumar made it two out of two in boxing for India in the men's 64kg, beating Evaldas Petrauskas 2-1 in his Round of 32 match. This was quite an upset, considering Petrauskas was the London 2012 bronze medallist and was heavily favoured to triumph over the Indian.
