The PGA Tour's Masters Championship for the 2023 season is shaping up to be a thrilling event, with a handful of talented young golfers who are worth keeping an eye on.
The tournament is held from Thursday to Sunday of the first week of April every year and this year it will be conducted from April 6 to 9. The tournament is reportedly set to have a purse of $15 million with $2.7 million as the winner's share.
Here are five under-30 golfers who could make a big
splash at The Masters tournament
1) Tom Kim
The two-time PGA Tour winner is only 20 years old. Kim made a splash at the Genesis Scottish Open, where he tied for third place alone and earned his first top-10 on the PGA Tour. His upcoming play in The Masters Championship seems to be a strongly anticipated one by critics and fans alike.
Although Kim had strong performances in the AT&T Byron Nelson (T17) and the U.S. Open (23rd), it was his outstanding showing at Renaissance Club that cemented his position as a rising star in the world of professional golf.
2) Sahith Theegala
Just three years after turning pro, the 25-year-old Indian American has secured a spot within the top 50 golfers of the world. Theegala has shown that he is a quick learner by qualifying for the Tour Championship in his first year, where he finished 28th. This was succeeded by a standout All-American career at Pepperdine University that included becoming just the fifth player to sweep the top awards in 2020—the Haskins Award, the Jack Nicklaus Award, and the Ben Hogan Award.
The PGA Tour pro, who competed in a whopping 32 events, led the circuit in birdies and rounds of 60 or better and came close to winning his maiden tournament at the Travelers Championship. We look forward to his game at The Masters Championship in April.
3) Collin Morikawa
Morikawa has had some early success playing against experts. In 2016, Morikawa, then a 19-year-old amateur, finished second at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship. Yet he elected to acquire a degree while allowing his game to develop rather than pursuing a professional career at that time, or at any other time throughout his stay in college. By the age of 23, he had won three PGA Tour titles, one of which was at a major tournament. He also had a remarkable streak of making cuts and was briefly ranked No. 5 in the world. He is set to swing about the teeing green at the 2023 Masters Championship.
4) Sungjae Im
Behind only Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas, and Scottie Scheffler, five golfers who combined for 10 victories and three majors in 2022, Im finished sixth on the circuit in strokes gained/total last year.
He played four rounds below par at the 2020 Masters, where he tied for second place with Cameron Smith at 15-under par. had five top-25 placings in 2023, including T-4 and T-6 in Phoenix and San Diego, respectively. He finished second in the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, Minnesota, and Greensboro last summer to cap off a successful campaign. The golfer then went 2-2-1 in Charlotte for the International Presidents Cup team.
5) Viktor Hovland
The 25-year-old pro picked up not one, but two PGA tour wins strikingly and adroitly in his very first tournament, becoming the first Norwegian to attain any wins on the PGA Tour. He managed to sink a jaw-dropping 30-foot putt on the very last hole against Josh Teater at the Puerto Rico Open before beating Aaron Wise in Mexico with a smooth finish. Hovland also further proved his skill when he went on to become the first ever Norwegian player to win on the European Tour the following year.
