Nanjing – Manu Gandas won India’s third medal at the Youth Asian Games by finishing second in the men’s individual strokeplay at the Zhangshan International Golf Club here today.

Gandas finished two shots behind gold winner and Chinese Taipei’s Yu Chun-An, who ended with an overall total of 203. Thailand’s Boonma Danthai shot 207 which was good enough for the bronze.

Another Indian in the fray Viraaj Madappa was tied ninth.

Gandas and Madappa are part of the Indian contingent competing as independent athletes following India’s suspension from the International Olympic Committee.

The silver medallist signed off in style with a birdie on the last hole.

“I was totally relaxed but my performance could have been better,” Gandas said.

On his competition experience, he said: “I came fifth in individual play in the Mercedes Asian Junior tournament. Now I look forward to coming back here for the Youth Olympics.”

The team is coached by Jasjit Singh, the National High Performance Manager with the Indian Golf Union.

Squash player Kush Kumar got India’s only gold so far in the continental event while Abhishek Yadav won a table tennis bronze.
