The 2024 LIV Golf season is soon coming to an end, with the Individual championship and team championship being decided by the end of September. Greg Norman has already made it clear that LIV Golf is here to stay, and the tour has also announced its 2025 schedule.
Before the beginning of the 2024 season, LIV announced then World No. 3 Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton's shock signing. They are on the lookout this year as well to sign on other members from the PGA Tour. There are several options that the Saudi-backed league can look out for, and here are three of the biggest names on the list.
3 golfers that LIV Golf might look to sign on for the 2025 season
Hideki Matsuyama
In the past, Greg Norman has made his intentions to sign Hideki Matsuyama clear. According to Golf Digest, Norman openly accepted that he had asked Matsuyama about joining LIV in the following statement:
"I'll give you another example. We've been trying to get Hideki Matsuyama. I don't mind admitting that. When Hideki won in LA, what's the first thing I did? I said, 'Congratulations, Hideki. I'm proud of you, mate'."
There has been no confirmation whether Matsuyama has been contacted by LIV Golf yet.
Viktor Hovland
Another golfer who has been on LIV's radar is Viktor Hovland. The Norwegian golfer almost made the move to LIV earlier this year, but had a last-minute change of heart. Explaining his decision, he said via Golf Monthly:
“At the end of the day, the question is ‘What’s going to make me a better player?’ And hey, in 20 years, if I’m on the back end of my career, playing LIV Golf wouldn’t be too bad. It might have been a pretty cool opportunity but, right now, it’s something I think I’d probably look back [on] and regret.”
However, he has had active talks with LIV in the past, and could possibly look at signing on for the new season. He has also been critical of the PGA Tour and of Jay Monahan's way of handling the merger agreement between the PGA Tour and the PIF.
Tony Finau
Tony Finau has also previously been a part of LIV Golf discussions, but has reportedly turned down an offer from them. Finau was contemplating joining the Saudi series in 2024, but made the decision to come back for his 10th season on the PGA Tour.
Finau might be a point of contention for LIV, especially after the OWGR 21 recently got selected for the Ryder Cup. There is about a four-month gap in which LIV will attempt to scout more members to join their league.
